Troy Aikman keeps it real discussing how Cowboys' offseason is going so far in 2024
Jim Rassol / USA TODAY NETWORK

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott made headlines after he made some telling comments about his future with the franchise at the Children’s Cancer Fund "A Knight to Remember" event.

But franchise legend Troy Aikman also had some notable words regarding the team's offseason so far when asked if he was surprised at the team's conservative approach. Aikman was candid in his assessment.

"I think that would probably be fair (to say I'm surprised)," Aikman told reporters. "I thought they would've done something with Dak already. I don't know if they're going to or what the gameplan is."

As it has seemingly been the case for a while, Aikman believes in Prescott and his stance is shared by many in Cowboys Nation and in the NFL world. Why isn't the team in a rush to extend the MVP runner up who lit it up last season and has been a quality starter for years?

Aikman, just like many media members and fans of the team, referred to Jerry Jones' infamous all-in comments from January and how it affected how the offseason has been perceived.

"I don't sense that it caught the organization by surprise," Aikman interestingly pointed out. "They have their thoughts and their plans, and how they're going to go about it."

What those plans are remains to be seen. With Dak's long-term future up in the air, the evaluation of how the front office is doing things shouldn't stop at determining if Prescott is the answer at quarterback or not.

A big part of the criticism heading the Cowboys' way has centered around the fact that even if they don't want to sign Prescott to a long-term extension, they should've come to terms with that earlier in order to get something in return via trade. Or if they did want to keep Dak, the best path would've been getting an extension done earlier to help with the salary cap and build a better team ahead of 2024.
