Rams HC Sean McVay: Adding Odell Beckham Jr. to offense 'a work in progress'

Star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. completed a messy and public divorce from the Cleveland Browns following the Nov. 2 trade deadline and ultimately joined the Los Angeles Rams a handful of days before their "Monday Night Football" matchup at the San Francisco 49ers on Nov. 15.

Beckham tallied two catches for 18 yards in his Rams debut ahead of the club's bye, and Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio notes head coach Sean McVay told reporters Tuesday that adding the three-time Pro Bowl selection to his offense is "a work in progress" as Los Angeles prepares for this coming Sunday's game at the Green Bay Packers.

"What I didn’t want to do is immerse him in some information and then you end up adjusting and changing," McVay said of Beckham's first several days with the organization. "So, I think you want to be able to foundationally build it the right way, formations, all those kinds of things, and then you do need to be specific with the way that we implement the game plan. What does that look like, what positions will he play in, who does that also affect as a result of just some of the moving pieces, different personnel groupings, and things of that nature. So that’s something that we started to really dive into [on Monday]. 

"I know he was doing some stuff behind the scenes. But he’s a smart, conscientious guy. I think the goal for us is making sure that we get a plan in alignment that provides clarity for all of our players, in particular Odell, just because he is new to the system. But there’s a lot of similarities in terms of the verbiage and the vernacular that they were utilizing in Cleveland. And so that will help and it’ll force us to be even that much more air-tight with our game plan, which I think is a good, positive thing for us as coaches as well." 

Beckham recorded only 17 catches for 232 yards and no touchdowns this season with the Browns before those two entities parted ways, so the 29-year-old has plenty to prove to his new employer and also to those who would suggest his best days are well in the past considering he last made a Pro Bowl squad in 2016 as a member of the New York Giants.
